Vacuuming Guinea Pig Poop

Can You Vacuum Guinea Pig Poop?

Yes you can, Guinea pig poop is small and pellet like. It won’t clog up the machine, or anything like that. Before you vacuum, be sure to clean our small bits of hay and hair that could get stuck in the machine.

Vacuums are noisy. The noise often scares larger pets like dogs and cats, so imagine how a guinea pig feels. The noise can frighten the already timid creatures. It is a good idea to transfer your guinea pig to another cage and put them in another room away from the noise.

Guinea pigs might be traumatised by loud noises, especially from something that moves and looks like a snake. The last thing you want is a frightened guinea pig. It means they will poop even more.

I recommend that you use a hand held vacuum (Available on Amazon) to clear the poop as it is much easier to access your cage with a hand held vacuum.  The video below shows you how to clean your guinea pig cage.

How Do You Clean Guinea Pig Poop?

To clean your guinea pig cage you will need the following items

  • Brush
  • Hand-Held Vacuum
  • Brush and Pan (If You Don’t Have Vacuum)

A small, hand-held vacuum cleaner should do the job. You want to be able to get it into the cage. For the tight corners you can use a brush or a small vacuum nozzle. Clean out any excess hay and hair from the cage so that it doesn’t clog the machine. Then you can vacuum up your guinea pigs’ poop with ease.

If you don’t have a small vacuum cleaner, a brush and pan will work just fine. You can buy specialised brushes and pans online or in pet stores. If you have a brush on hand, sweep out all the poop, any dirty bits of hay and hair.

Using a brush and pan means there is no noise, so that you don’t have to remove your guinea pig to another cage or room. Guinea pigs might still be frightened of the brush and pan, so keep this in mind. Remember to be gentle with your guinea pig.

Why Does My Guinea Pig Poop Everywhere?

Guinea pigs typically poop a lot in comparison to dogs and cats, guinea pigs are a pooping machine. They can leave around 100 droppings a day in their cage. This is normal. But, if you find that your guinea pig is pooping more than usual, there might be something wrong and you should take them to the vet for a check up.

Guinea Pigs poop a lot if they are nervous. It is a good idea to keep them away from larger pets. Make sure they are in a reasonably quiet environment. As mentioned above, you don’t want to scare them when vacuuming or sweeping, so make sure they are placed somewhere nice and quiet.

It is important to look out for signs your pig is scared or nervous, The below video will show you what signs to look out for.

Why Does My Guinea Pig Poops A lot

Excess pooping can also be a sign of physical or psychological health problems. These might be nothing to worry about, but there could also be serious health problems. If you are ever concerned, talk to a vet. The problem might be more than just a slight case of nerves.

Something might have traumatised your pet. Therefore, it is important to minimise the noise from things like vacuum cleaners. Make sure you keep your guinea pig away from larger animals. And, if you have children, or little children come to visit, make sure they are gentle.

Children can pat and hold guinea pigs, but it isn’t a good idea to have noisy children around your guinea pig, as this can be intimidating, especially as children are a lot bigger and noisier than guinea pigs are used to.

Keep an eye on your guinea pig’s pooping habits. If they poop a lot, change their diet, or give them less food. Guinea pigs can eat most fruits and vegetables. Never feed them onion, and only give them sweet fruits, like melons, in moderation.

How Often Should I Clean My Guinea Pigs Poop?

That depends on how much they poop, and how many guinea pigs you have. You might have to clean their cage out once a day, or a few times a day. A dirty cage presents a health hazard to guinea pigs, and can make them very sick if not cleaned up. This is especially a problem if you have more than one guinea pig.

You don’t want one animal making the others sick. Guinea pig poop, like all poop, can be smelly. If it smells very bad, and you are concerned, you should talk to a vet. Make sure you clean out their cage regularly so that your guinea pig is clean and happy. Guinea pigs hate to be dirty, and they hate bad smells.

They will clean themselves in the same way that cats do. You need to clean their cage out at least once a day, or every second day so that they are comfortable.

Guinea pigs are small, and so are a lot easier to take care of than dogs and cats. They poop a lot more than other animals, but their poop is small and can be vacuumed up.

Cleaning up after guinea pigs is easy, but you will have to do it often. The more guinea pigs you have, the more you will have to clean. Set aside some time at the end of the day to quickly vacuum out their cage, remembering to move your pet guinea pig to a quiet area. Your guinea pig will love you even more after you clean their cage.
